It has been a fairly busy year so far for the Flotilla. Although callouts are down, a lot of behind the scenes work has been going on to raise money for the new Ops Centre. There has also been some running around, seeing to those bits and pieces that the various people need for their engineering reports. It has been a period of losses and gains with some members leaving but also some new ones joining, and some returning members.
The Storms that seemed to start in May and didn't finish until late October haven't done us too much damage although with the big one that blacked out the state, the Radio Base almost had a moat around it. Some of our work over the winter and spring months has been to retrieve parts of the Wallaroo and Port Hughes jetties that were found floating out in their respective bays. The Port Hughes ramp basin is now so choked up with sand and weed that we have had to call a halt to our operations through this boat ramp until it has all been cleaned out, so all duty work will be coming out through Wallaroo.
In August members of the Flotilla attended the Squadron's Awards Night and the Copper Coast Flotilla won the Most Efficient Country Craft and Crew Award. Also the Best Presented Vessel at the 2015 vessel audits was won by our auxiliary vessel, Hot Shot, owned by Graham Fleet. Congratulations!
We are now in the final stages of getting all of those items done that stand between us and final Council approval to start the actual building of the new Ops Centre and we are hoping to dig the first hole on the block in the first half of 2017.
We have just gone through the Base and Vessel audit for the year 2016/17 and although all of the boats have passed, two have been restricted to the two N/m mark due to age and hull condition. It may be time to pass the baton over to newer boats.
